, there was a lot of enthusiasm about anything. that is a disaster, just as governor romney. president obama will muster lemaster with a historically low percentage of white voters. only 39%. 39%, the president had a little extra support in other places. 71% of the hispanic vote. 71%. 73% voted for president obama. but the black vote was spectacular. he got 93% of the black vote. talk about a consensus, that is a consensus. the key was the black voter turnout. making just about 12% of the eligible voters in the country. they turned up 13% of the total votes from last year. for the first time ever, voters turn out at a higher rate than white voters overall last year. in fact, if they turned out at the same rate as they did back in 2004, governor romney would have actually won the election. it's not clear that the democratic party can repeat last year's performance. but one thing is clear. everything the republican party did was inadequate. they certainly demonstrated that the republican party has a lot of thinking to do. they better find some better thinkers if they are going to be competitiv

the white house is under growing pressure to take some kind of action. so far president obama has been reluctant to get involved, but as abc's jonathan karl reports that may be changing. >> reporter: embattled syrian president bashar al assad the man accused of using chemical weapons on his own people made his first public appearance in more than a month appearing entirely at ease on syrian state tv, touring an electrical plant in damascus. the white house is turning up the heat. >> syria's future cannot include assad. his hands are bathed in blood, the blood of his own people. he has no place in syria's future and no support from the syrian people. >> reporter: senior u.s. officials say the administration is now considering sending weapons to rebel fighters. they have requested anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. abc news has learned the first nonmilitary aid to rebel fighters arrived in syria and more is in the pipeline. including body armor, military vehicles, and night vision goggles. sending weapons would be a big escalation, and a move that president obama rejected last year out

to poisoned letters sent to president obama and other officials two eks ago. kristin welker is at the white house for us. what is the latest in these developments? >> reporter: alec, good afternoon to you. fbi officials confirm that special agents did arrest 41-year-old everett dutschke this afternoon, and authorities in tupelo, mississippi, say that the arrest is in connection with those ricin-laced letters that were addressed to president obama and members of congress. at this point in time though, no charges have been filed and no word on what specific charges will be filed. he is being held in a detention center expected to be arraigned on monday. now, his home was actually investigated by authorities tuesday and wednesday. so reporters have been outside of his house on a number of different days this week, alex. our local affiliate actually interviewed him earlier this week. take a listen to what dutschke had to say. >> i had absolutely nothing to do with those letters and the person that was -- her defense attorney or his defense attorney said -- steered them in my direction because i
